Hourglass and The Flag #1, 2020

Corten steel, 465 × 350 × 250 cm and 300 × 350 × 250 cm, respectively.

Raul Mourão investigates the relationship between balance, tension, and movement through structures inspired by the urban context. The scale and materiality of his works take on an almost architectural presence here, yet they do not remain fixed: when activated, they oscillate and dance in direct relation to weight and gravity, producing a field of risk and wonder. In Hourglass and The Flag, the interplay of forces is unstable and provisional, indicating that the forms of organisation within the city (and social life) are constituted through processes of permanent negotiation.
